About Toy Aussies

Origin and History

Toy Australian Shepherds are not a recognized breed as of yet, however registration is available through the American Stock Dog Registry. Toy Aussies have been bred to be smaller than Mini Aussies but share much of the same lineage and history. The breed was developed in California as a sheep herding dog for shepherds, they were created from a mix of different sheepdogs and their closest relatives are thought to be the border collie. Since originating, the breed has become a popular companion dog although they still work as herding dogs and commonly compete in dog shows!

Appearance & Size

The average Toy Aussie weighs around 10-17 lbs and stands between 10-14 inches tall. They are extremely athletic with collie-like coats and feathery ends, legs, and tails. Coat colors come in quite the variety including Blue Merle, Red Merle, Black Tri, and Red Tri. Toy Aussies are often seen with various markings, blue eyes, and sometimes two different colored eyes!

Personality

Just like other herding breeds, Toy Aussies are very active, playful, and highly intelligent. They make great family dogs as they are affectionate and protective of their loved ones. They are great natured dogs who are not known to be aggressive and adapt well to other animals and new environments. Their high energy levels do equate to boredom and loneliness which can result in destructive behaviors. Social interaction and regular stimulation is important for this breed. Toy Aussies bark A LOT and can be very vocal due to their working background, regular training and engagement can mitigate excessive barking.

Training

Toy Aussies are highly trainable and eager to please, owners should start training early on to help build a bond. Keep training lessons short and fun to keep boredom at bay, also keep clear and concise to avoid confusion and possible stubborn behavior. Toy Aussies thrive on positive reinforcement and will strive to please when given the opportunity. As with all breeds, start socialization should start as early as possible,
